A golf simulator asks a projector to do something no home theater ever asks of it: throw a large, bright image from directly overhead, onto a screen someone is about to hit a ball into, in a room that usually has the lights on. Almost every specification that sells a projector to a movie watcher is irrelevant here, and the two that decide whether the build works — throw ratio and usable brightness — are the ones nobody puts on the front of the box.
This guide is built around the machines that are actually shipping in 2026, with the numbers their manufacturers publish rather than the numbers dealers repeat. Prices are what the projectors sell for now, not list. Every pick below is a DLP machine from BenQ or Optoma, which is not a preference so much as a description of the market — the two brands have divided this category between them, and the rest of the industry has not seriously contested it.
Throw ratio is the constraint, not the preference
The projector goes on the ceiling, behind the hitting position, because anywhere else puts a golfer’s shadow across the ball flight. That means the distance from lens to screen is fixed by the room, and the image width is fixed by the impact screen you have already bought. Throw ratio is the number that reconciles the two: multiply the screen width by the throw ratio and you get the distance the projector must sit at.
A common home enclosure is about 12 feet wide. At 0.48:1 that puts the lens 5 feet 9 inches from the screen; at 0.69:1 it moves back to 8 feet 3 inches; at 0.83:1 it is just under 10 feet. Most two-car garages and basements take the first two and choke on the third, because at ten feet of throw the projector has moved back over the golfer’s head and into the swing plane of a driver. Dealers converge on roughly 0.5:1 as the safe number for a tight room and on 3,000 lumens as the floor for a dedicated space. Both are reasonable rules; neither substitutes for measuring the room.
The other thing to settle before shopping is aspect ratio. Impact screens are built to fill a bay, so they end up 16:9, 16:10, occasionally close to square, and rarely exactly what a projector outputs. Reshaping the image without cropping into the picture is worth more than an extra 500 lumens.
BenQ AK700ST — $2,899
The AK700ST is the projector to buy if the budget reaches it. BenQ rates it at 4,000 ANSI lumens from a 20,000-hour laser, at 3840 x 2160, with a 0.69 to 0.83:1 throw ratio and a 1.2x zoom. The published specification lists input lag from 8.4ms at 1080p/240Hz to 33.4ms at 4K/60Hz, noise at 32dB dropping to 29dB in eco, and a 3.4kg body — light enough that a single ceiling mount into one joist will hold it.
Two features justify the golf branding rather than decorate it. Auto Screen Fit detects the impact screen and conforms the image to 16:9, 16:10, 4:3 or 1:1 without manual masking, which removes the most common source of a crooked first install. And the optics carry an IP5X dust rating, which matters more than it sounds: a garage sim runs a fan pulling air through a room that has a hitting mat, artificial turf fibres and a car in it.
The one real limitation is the throw ratio. At 0.69:1 the AK700ST needs more room behind the golfer than the tight-space Optomas do. Measure before ordering.
BenQ LK936ST — $4,899
The LK936ST is the install-grade option and the only projector here with real optical lens shift: plus or minus 60% vertical and 23% horizontal. That is what the extra two thousand dollars buys, and it is not a luxury in a finished room. Ceiling joists sit where they sit. Without lens shift you either move the mount or correct the geometry digitally, and digital keystone throws away pixels and softens the whole image to fix a problem the lens should have fixed.
It is also the brightest thing on this list at 5,100 ANSI lumens, native 4K, on a laser rated 20,000 hours standard or 30,000 in eco. Throw ratio is 0.81 to 0.89:1, so it wants a longer room than the AK700ST, and it weighs 15.4 pounds, so it wants a proper mount. Input lag is 34ms at 1080p/60, which is fine for ball flight and poor by the standards of the projectors built for gaming. ProjectorCentral’s specification page has the full sheet, including the HDBaseT and DisplayPort inputs that make it a genuine installer product rather than a consumer one.
Buy it for the lens shift and the 5,100 lumens in a bright garage. Do not buy it for the 4K, because at seven feet from a woven impact screen almost nobody resolves the difference between it and a good 1080p image.
Optoma GT2400HDR — $1,299
Released in March 2026 and, on paper, the best value in the category. 4,200 ISO lumens from a 30,000-hour laser, native 1080p, and a 0.48:1 throw ratio that puts a 12-foot image less than six feet from the screen. It runs 31dB in standard mode, weighs 6.6 pounds, carries dual HDMI 2.0, and turns in 8.4ms of input lag at 1080p/120Hz and 16.7ms at both 1080p/60 and 4K/60.
It is also IP6X rated and specified for 24/7 operation, which is the honest reason it beats several laser projectors costing twice as much in a garage build. Optoma markets it as golf-ready and, unusually for that phrase, has the throw ratio and the dust sealing to support it.
The trade is resolution. This is a native 1080p panel accepting 4K input, not a 4K projector. For a simulator that is very close to a non-issue, and it is why this machine, not the BenQ, is the one most home builds should start from.
Optoma ZW350ST — around $799
The cheapest laser projector that genuinely works in this role. It is rated at 3,600 ISO lumens with a 0.52:1 throw ratio, a 30,000-hour light source, IP6X sealing, 34dB of noise and a 6.6-pound body, against a $1,399 list that has settled to roughly $799 on the street.
Its native resolution is 1280 x 800, which is WXGA and, importantly, natively 16:10. A large share of impact screens are closer to 16:10 than 16:9, and a projector that is already that shape wastes nothing filling them. What you give up is sharpness on scorecards, menus and small overlay text, which is where a 1280 x 800 panel starts to look its age. The full specification lists HDMI 1.4a rather than 2.0, so plan the source accordingly.
For a first simulator, or one that will be replaced when the room is finished properly, this is the sensible amount of money to spend.
BenQ TH671ST — $949
The one lamp projector worth listing, and only because it does something the laser options at this price do not: 1080p at 3,000 ANSI lumens with 16.4ms of input lag at 1080p/60 and 8ms at 120Hz, in a six-pound body, at a throw ratio of 0.69 to 0.83:1.
The catch is the light engine: a 240W metal halide lamp rated at 4,000 hours standard and 15,000 in eco, and lamps dim measurably long before they fail. Against the ZW350ST’s 30,000-hour laser at a lower price, the case for the BenQ rests entirely on wanting 1080p rather than WXGA.
The one to think twice about
BenQ’s AH700ST is the AK700ST with a 1080p panel instead of a 4K one. Same 4,000 ANSI lumens, same 0.69 to 0.83:1 throw, same 20,000-hour laser, same Auto Screen Fit, same chassis. It sells for around $2,299 to $2,499; the AK700ST sells for $2,899.
Whether $400 to $600 is worth 4K in a simulator is genuinely arguable. What is not arguable is the comparison one step down: the Optoma GT2400HDR delivers more lumens, a shorter throw, better dust sealing and lower input lag for a thousand dollars less, and gives up only the Auto Screen Fit convenience. Off discount, the AH700ST sits in the least defensible position on this page.
What actually goes wrong
Three failures account for most unhappy builds, and none of them are the projector’s fault. Buying before measuring the ceiling: a 0.83:1 machine in a room that needed 0.5:1 cannot be fixed in the settings menu. Trusting a lumens figure that is neither ANSI nor ISO: the sub-$500 projectors advertising five-figure brightness produce a washed-out, unusable image on an impact screen, and it is the most common expensive mistake in the category. And ignoring dust — a projector with no IP rating, hanging above a hitting mat in a garage, will show a dark blotch on the image within a year or two, and clearing it is not a home job.
If the room is tight and the budget is normal, the Optoma GT2400HDR is the pick. If the room is long enough and the money is there, the BenQ AK700ST is the better projector and the easier install. If the ceiling has already decided where the mount goes, the LK936ST’s lens shift is the only thing on this list that will save the build. Everything else on this page is a compromise, and the ones worth making are the ones made on purpose.
