XGIMI moved its Kunlun series into mass production this month, a range of commercial installation projectors running from 12,000 to 25,000 lumens on pure RGB triple-laser light engines. The launch went out on September 8 through Chinese trade press, aimed at large exhibition builds and outdoor architectural lighting. No model numbers were published, no prices, and nothing about availability outside China. None of XGIMI’s overseas storefronts list the range at all.
That upper figure is the part worth stopping on. Twenty-five thousand lumens is rental-and-staging territory — the bracket occupied by Panasonic, Epson, Barco and Christie, where a single body can cost more than a car. Christie’s CP4415M, an RGB machine rated at 15,000 lumens, lists at $68,900. XGIMI has spent a decade selling gimbal-mounted boxes to people who watch television on a wall.
The engineering claim underneath the range is a change of imaging chip. Most commercial projectors in this output band are built around a 0.67-inch DMD. Kunlun uses a 0.8-inch DMD instead, built on what the company calls the HEP architecture rather than the VSP one the smaller chip uses, and XGIMI’s argument for the swap is thermal rather than optical: push the same light through a smaller mirror array and you raise the energy density on it, which costs you picture quality and service life before it costs you brightness.
The numbers the company puts on the change are a 42 percent increase in effective chip area, a 40 percent lift in native contrast, and optical power density rising from 34.7 watts per square centimetre on the 0.67-inch architecture to 75 watts on the 0.8-inch one. Colour handling is passed to X-VISION, the in-house image processor line XGIMI also puts in its consumer ultra short throws, including the Aura 3 series it opened on Kickstarter at $2,399. Running it as a separate chip rather than a software task on the main SoC is the standard fix for colour drift under sustained high output.
Kunlun also carries photoelectric sensors that watch the output of each laser and correct colour temperature in a closed loop, without a technician and without a probe. RGB laser sources drift as they heat and age, and the usual answer is a calibration visit. On a permanent install running lighting shows every night, removing that visit is worth real money.
The rest of the specification reads like a list written by installers rather than marketers. Motorised lens shift covers ±130 percent vertically and ±50 percent horizontally on the factory lens, with lens memory so focus, zoom and shift positions can be recalled when a rig changes throw distance. Geometry correction runs on a 65 by 65 grid for curved and spherical surfaces. There is a graphical level indicator fed by internal sensors so nobody has to climb a ladder with a spirit level.
Above that sits a web console for managing a fleet — status, parameter changes and content swaps across every unit from one screen — and APEX OS, an internal playback system that removes the laptop and the USB stick from the content-update loop. Units can clone configuration to each other, sync brightness and colour for edge-blended arrays, and share 3D timing. On the hardware side: silent liquid cooling, IP6X sealing against dust for outdoor and semi-open sites, a light source rated past 25,000 hours, and Grade 1 certification under China’s GB 32028-2025 energy standard, which matters mainly because it clears the bar for government procurement and green-building rules.
Nothing in that list is exotic on its own. Assembled, it is a competent first attempt at a product class XGIMI has not shipped before, and the emphasis on remote management and automatic calibration is a fair read of where the cost actually sits in a large install — not in the box, but in the people who have to keep visiting it.
What the announcement does not say is which standard the 12,000 and 25,000 figures were measured to. Chinese projector specifications circulate in at least three currencies — ANSI, ISO 21118 and the domestic CVIA rating — and they do not convert cleanly. This is not a hypothetical objection in this market: we have already watched the same JMGO projector rated at 6,500 ISO lumens abroad and 5,600 CVIA at home. A commercial buyer specifying screen size against ambient light needs to know which one is on the datasheet, and right now the datasheet is not public.
There is also no third-party measurement, which is expected this early, and no price. Until one appears, the interesting question is not whether Kunlun is good. It is what a 25,000-lumen projector from a consumer brand is priced at when the incumbents in that bracket sell through system integrators with margins built for them.
The timing is the most legible part of this. XGIMI’s half-year filing, published on August 29, put overseas revenue at 748 million yuan, up 87.63 percent and now 46.58 percent of the company. Subtract that from the 1.606 billion total and the domestic business comes out around 858 million, roughly 30 percent smaller than a year earlier. Total revenue barely moved because exports covered almost exactly what China lost.
A company reading those numbers has two obvious moves, and XGIMI is making both at once. Abroad, it is building a separate US dealer brand, XWALL, run by the man who founded AWOL Vision. At home, where consumers have stopped buying, it is walking into the commercial channel — exhibitions, civic lighting, projection mapping — which is procurement-driven, contract-length, and largely indifferent to how the home market is feeling.
Which puts XGIMI on a road somebody else is coming down in the opposite direction. Appotronics, the company that invented ALPD laser phosphor and supplies light engines to half the industry, reported first-half revenue down 50.36 percent and told its own investors the consumer side is in decline and it is not spending to fight it. One firm is retreating from consumer toward its professional base; the other is leaving its consumer base to find a professional one. They will meet somewhere around 20,000 lumens, and neither of them started there.
