Epson is the last large projector brand still building nearly everything it sells around three LCD panels. While the rest of the market moved to single-chip DLP and then to RGB triple lasers, Epson kept the 3LCD engine and kept making the same argument for it: three panels, one for each primary, no colour wheel, and a colour brightness figure that matches the white brightness figure instead of falling below it. That argument holds up better in a bright room than in a blacked-out one, which is a useful thing to know before spending anything on this list.
Every price below is Epson’s own list price as of early September 2026. Street prices drift and Epson runs its own promotions, so treat these as the ceiling.
The 2350 is where the range starts making sense for a dedicated room. It is rated at 2,800 lumens of colour and white brightness, runs Epson’s 4K PRO-UHD pixel-shifting rather than a native 4K panel, and carries Android TV on board so it does not need a stick hanging off the back. Input lag sits under 20 milliseconds, which is enough for console gaming that is not competitive shooting, and there is a vertical lens shift, which matters more than the spec sheet makes it sound: it is the difference between mounting the projector where the ceiling joist is and mounting it where the maths says it has to go.
It is lamp-based, using the ELPLP97, and that is the trade: cheaper up front, more expensive over five years, and dimming gradually in a way a laser does not. At two hours a night, budget for a replacement lamp around year three.
This is the one to buy if the projector is replacing a television rather than joining one. The LS650 is an ultra short throw, laser-driven, rated at 3,600 lumens of colour and white brightness, and it throws up to 120 inches from a cabinet against the wall. Android TV handles the apps, and a 2.1 system designed by Yamaha handles the sound, which for a living-room machine is not a detail — the alternative is running a soundbar and a projector from the same power strip and hoping the lip sync holds.
At $1,799.99 it now sits well under the $2,799 it launched at, and well under most of the ultra short throws that have been announced this year. Anyone shopping the category should read that against the rest of the ultra short throw field, where the new arrivals are asking two to four times as much and putting the difference into triple lasers and 120Hz panels.
The 5050UB is old and it is still here for a reason. Its 250-watt UHE lamp puts out 2,600 lumens, less than the cheaper 2350, and it beats almost everything Epson makes on the thing enthusiasts argue about: black level. UltraBlack, Epson’s polarisation-based contrast stage, gets it to a claimed 1,000,000:1 dynamic, and the optics are the good ones — 2.1x zoom, plus or minus 96.3 percent vertical and 47.1 percent horizontal lens shift.
Two caveats. It is a lamp projector in 2026, so the running costs apply as they do to the 2350. And it does no 120Hz, so gamers with current consoles should skip past it. For a dark room and a film library, it is still the most convincing picture Epson sells under $4,000.
The LS11000 is what happens when Epson takes the 5050UB brief and swaps the lamp for a laser array. It is rated at 2,500 lumens of colour and white brightness with a dynamic contrast figure above 1,200,000:1, and the lens hardware carries over: roughly plus or minus 96 percent vertical and 47 percent horizontal shift, motorised zoom with position memory for people running a wide screen.
The reason to spend the extra $700 over the 5050UB is not the picture in a dark room; it is everything around it. HDMI 2.1 at 48Gbps, 4K at 120Hz, input lag under 20 milliseconds, HDR10+ and HLG alongside standard HDR10. A laser light source that does not need a replacement part in year three. If the projector is going to be fed by a PlayStation or a gaming PC as often as by a disc player, this is the first model in the range that is properly built for it.
The LS12000 is the same generation of machine sold through the dealer channel, and the reason it sits here rather than folded into the LS11000 entry is what the extra $1,500 actually covers. It is rated slightly brighter at 2,700 lumens of colour and white brightness, its UltraBlack stage is quoted above 2,500,000:1 dynamic, and it ships with a ceiling mount and a cable cover in the box, on a three-year warranty with two-business-day full unit replacement. For anyone having it installed rather than shelving it themselves, that gap narrows considerably. For anyone unboxing it alone on a Saturday, it does not.
The QB1000 is the standard-throw entry to Epson’s Q-Series, rated at 3,300 lumens from a laser 3LCD engine. It exists because the premium argument moved: above $5,000 the question used to be black level, and now it is holding a big, bright HDR image without dimming it. The series has widened around it since launch: the ultra short throw QS100 sits below it at $5,499 while rating 4,500 lumens, and above both the Q-Series turns into installation equipment — the QL3000 at $16,999 and the QL7000 at $33,999 ship as bodies with no lens and are rated at 6,000 and 10,000 ISO lumens.
The cheap end of Epson’s range is the part that gets overlooked, mostly because the sub-$500 shelf on Amazon is crowded with brands that publish LED lumen figures nobody can check. The CO-FH02 is a 1080p portable rated at 3,000 lumens, with Android TV built in and an image that scales to 300 inches. Its MSRP is $629.99 and Epson has been selling it at $499.99. The CO-W01 below it, at $399.99, drops to widescreen resolution and loses the streaming platform, which makes it a meeting-room machine that occasionally does film night.
Neither is a home cinema projector and neither pretends to be. What they are is a 3LCD projector with a brightness figure measured the same way the expensive ones are, which is more than can be said for most of what sits beside them on the sub-$500 shelf.
Two absences shape this list. There is no RGB triple laser anywhere in it. The wide-gamut, high-contrast machines coming out of Chinese brands this year use three discrete lasers to hit 110 percent of Rec.2020 and claimed contrast in the tens of thousands to one; Epson’s laser models use a laser array rather than three discrete laser channels, which is a quieter, cheaper and more predictable arrangement that does not reach the same colour volume. Epson is betting that most buyers will not see the difference on a normal screen in a normal room. That bet is getting harder to win each year.
The second absence is Google TV. Epson ships Android TV, which looks similar and is not the same thing, and the Netflix situation on Android TV projectors has historically been messier. Check the app list against what the household actually watches before assuming a $4,500 projector opens everything a $300 one does.
Three questions decide almost every purchase in this range. Is the room dark or lit? A lit room wants the LS650 or the 2350 and their higher colour brightness; a dark one rewards the 5050UB and the LS11000. Is there a console? If yes, the 120Hz models are the only ones worth considering, which rules out everything under $4,499.99 in this list. And how long will it stay? A lamp is cheaper today and more expensive by year four, which is the whole case for the laser models over the 5050UB.
What is not in question is the colour brightness argument, which is the one Epson has been making for fifteen years and the one that still separates its projectors from single-chip rivals at the same price. Whether that is worth paying for depends entirely on whether the lights will be on.
