Fujifilm started selling the FP-ZUH12000 on August 6, two days after announcing it. It is a 12,000-lumen 4K laser projector aimed at museums, lecture halls and event spaces, and it is the first machine in the company’s Z Series that takes interchangeable lenses. European retailers have it listed at around €33,000; Fujifilm has not published a US price.
Three lenses launched alongside it, and they are the reason the projector exists in the shape it does. The FP-ZL125 is the standard option at a 1.25–2.0 throw ratio, the FP-ZL050 covers short throw at 0.5–0.65, and the FP-ZL034 is an ultra-short-throw lens at 0.34–0.41 that Fujifilm describes as the only one on the market built around a folded rotatable mechanism.
The FP-ZL034 is the part worth looking at. Light leaves the projector body, turns through a folded path built from 20 elements and two mirrors, and exits through a large-diameter aspherical front element mounted on a head that swivels a full 360 degrees. The arm carrying that head rotates 90 degrees against the chassis. Between the two movements you can aim the image at a wall, a ceiling, a floor or a curved surface without repositioning the projector or hanging it from a rigged frame.
At its widest the lens puts a 400-inch diagonal on a surface 9.7 feet away. It also carries 60% vertical and 30% horizontal lens shift, which Fujifilm calls one of the widest ranges in its class and which is the specification that will surprise anyone who has installed a UST projector before. Ultra-short-throw optics normally trade shift away entirely — the geometry is already so aggressive that manufacturers fix the lens and tell you to move the projector. Being able to slide the image after the machine is bolted down is a meaningfully different install job.
None of this is a new idea at Fujifilm. The rotating folded lens has been the company’s signature since the Z Series arrived, and our review of the FP-Z6000 covered the same mechanism at half the brightness. What changed with the ZUH12000 is that the lens is now removable, so the trick is one option among three rather than the entire product.
The body is 18.1 kg without a lens, in a chassis measuring 535 × 396 × 189 mm. The lenses add up to another 4.5 kg depending on which one you fit.
For a 12,000-lumen installation projector those are unusual numbers. Panasonic’s PT-REQ12, also a 1-chip DLP unit at 12,000 lumens, is listed at 28.8 kg with its supplied lens. Epson’s 3LCD EB-L12000QNL at the same brightness is 51.4 kg before you add glass. Fujifilm has landed roughly a third under the lighter of those two, and in this category weight is not a spec-sheet nicety — it decides how many people are on the install, what the mounting structure has to be rated for, and whether a venue can move the projector between rooms at all.
Imaging is handled by a single 0.8-inch HEP DMD with 9-micron pixels and a 14.5-degree mirror tilt angle, driven by a laser source. Native resolution is 3840 × 2400 — four thousand pixels wide, but 16:10 rather than the 16:9 that consumer 4K implies. That is the aspect ratio of the room-scale market this projector is built for: gallery walls, stacked and blended arrays, presentation surfaces that are never going to be a movie screen. Anyone buying it to watch films is buying the wrong projector, and Fujifilm has not pretended otherwise.
Against the FP-ZUH6000 that sits below it in the range, the new model doubles brightness. Geometric correction and edge blending are built in, which is the expected kit for multi-projector work. Connectivity is dual HDMI 2.0, SDI, Ethernet and a powered USB Type-A — note HDMI 2.0, not 2.1, so 4K tops out at 60Hz. In fixed installation that is almost never the constraint it would be on a home projector, but it does mean the ZUH12000 is not a machine you would spec for high-frame-rate content.
Fujifilm has ported its camera colour profiles across: PROVIA, Velvia, ETERNA, CLASSIC CHROME and CLASSIC Neg. all appear as picture modes. It is easy to read that as marketing borrowed from the X-series, and on a projector destined for a conference room it probably is.
In a photography gallery it is not. A print show hung by a photographer who shot on ETERNA and graded to it has a defensible reason to want the projected version to match, and there is currently no other way to get that look out of a projector without a colour management pass in the signal chain. It is a narrow use case. It also happens to be one Fujifilm is better placed to serve than anyone else selling into the same venues.
Fujifilm first showed the ZUH12000 at InfoComm in June, in a booth built around an immersive 360-degree projection space running the older ZUH6000s. Two months later it is shipping, which is a faster trade-show-to-availability turn than this category usually manages.
The company remains a small player in projection next to Epson, Panasonic, Barco and Christie, and it is not trying to win on price or on the specification sheet as a whole. It is winning on one component. Nobody else is selling a UST lens that rotates in two axes and still gives you lens shift, and for a museum putting a 400-inch image onto a wall from ten feet with no rigging overhead, that single capability is what the quote turns on.
The open question is the US price. €33,000 converts to a number that sits well above Panasonic’s comparable unit before either projector has a lens on it, and lens-only-on-request pricing in this category can add five figures. Fujifilm has a genuinely differentiated product; whether it has a competitive one depends entirely on a figure the company has not yet published.
For anyone reading this from the home theatre end of the market, the throw-ratio arithmetic that makes the FP-ZL034 impressive is the same arithmetic that governs a living-room UST — and it is why screen choice matters more with UST than with any other projector type. The consumer version of this fight is being fought a couple of orders of magnitude down the price list, where Epson’s $3,799 UST measured above its own brightness claim earlier this month.
