Dangbei listed a new projector called the RX10 on JD.com on August 22 at 5,499 yuan, roughly 820 US dollars. It is a 1080p machine with a laser light source, rated at 1,200 CVIA lumens, and the entire product is built around a motorised gimbal that tilts through 225 degrees. There is no Western launch date and no international pricing.
The optical side is conventional for the class. A 0.33-inch DMD chip gives native 1920 x 1080 with 4K input accepted and downscaled, the throw ratio is 1.2:1, and the brightness figure is quoted twice over, as 1,200 CVIA lumens and 1,200 ISO lumens. Chinese specification listings describe the light source as an ALPD laser engine, the laser-phosphor architecture that removes the speckle you get from a raw RGB laser array. Inside is a MediaTek MT9669 with 3GB of memory and 32GB of storage, running Dangbei OS 5.0 on an Android base with HDR10, HLG and MEMC frame interpolation. Wireless is Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. On the back there is one HDMI 2.1 port with eARC and one USB 2.0. The body is a mix of glass, polycarbonate, resin and carbon steel, and it weighs 2.1kg.
Two days before the RX10 appeared, Dangbei opened presales on the D7X Pro Super Bright Edition at 3,799 yuan, about 565 dollars. That machine has a 0.39-inch chip, pure RGB triple-laser illumination, a rated 1,700 CVIA lumens, 4K output and a genuine 0.98:1 to 1.3:1 optical zoom. It is brighter, sharper and more flexible about where you put it, and it is 1,700 yuan cheaper.
Read the two listings side by side and the RX10 stops looking like a step up the specification ladder. It is a step sideways. Nobody is paying the premium for pixels or for light output, because on both counts the cheaper model wins. The money is going into the mechanism, the enclosure and the acoustics. That is an unusual thing for Dangbei to sell, and it is worth saying why.
For most of the past two years the company has competed on a single axis, which is brightness per yuan. We wrote about that in the D7X launch, where the whole pitch fit into one number and a price tag. Winning that fight for long enough eventually buys you the room to stop fighting it. The RX10 is what that room looks like: a product whose reason to exist is how it moves, not how hard it shines.
The gimbal is a single integrated unit rather than a bolt-on stand. Its 225 degrees of vertical travel takes the lens from pointing down at a low wall to pointing straight up at the ceiling without the projector being propped on books, which is the usual solution and the usual reason a cheap projector ends up with a trapezoid on the wall. Dangbei pairs it with real-time AI correction and omnidirectional automatic keystone, on the argument that a projector you are constantly repositioning needs correction that keeps up while you are still moving it, not two seconds after you stop. There is obstacle detection as well.
The speakers sit inside the gimbal base rather than in the projector head, a pair of 6W drivers firing forward, with Dangbei quoting bandwidth up to 20kHz. Putting the drivers in the base is the same reasoning Aurzen used on its D1R air at a fifth of the price: a separate chamber gives the cone more air to move and keeps the vibration out of the optical path. It also means the sound keeps pointing at you when the lens swings up at the ceiling, which is the part that actually matters in a machine designed to be aimed in odd directions.
The light source is the detail worth pausing on. ALPD is Appotronics’ trademark, and on August 21 Appotronics published a half-year report in which revenue fell 50.4 per cent while it deliberately pulled back from finished consumer projectors and pushed its upstream light-source components instead. We covered the filing when it landed, and the strategy read cleanly enough on paper: stop selling boxes, sell the engine inside somebody else’s box.
A Dangbei consumer projector whose specification sheet carries the ALPD name is that sentence turning into a product. It is one listing and it proves nothing about volumes, and Dangbei has not issued a supply statement of any kind. But if you were looking for the first visible sign of what Appotronics meant, this is the shape it would take.
Dangbei sells a narrower range in the United States than at home, and the RX10’s Chinese price lands awkwardly in the middle of it. The N2 mini is 179 dollars, the N3 Max is 399.99 dollars, and the DBOX02 sits at 1,199 dollars. Converted directly, the RX10 would arrive at roughly twice the N3 Max while being dimmer than it, because the N3 Max is rated at 1,000 ISO lumens with a sealed optical engine and licensed Netflix on VIDAA. Direct conversion is not how these products get priced abroad, but the ordering rarely inverts.
There is also a category question the RX10 would have to answer abroad that it does not have to answer at home. In China it sits among a dozen gimbal-mounted smart projectors from Dangbei, XGIMI, JMGO and Xiaomi, and buyers already understand what the format is for. In the United States the gimbal is still a budget-shelf idea, familiar mostly from sub-200-dollar machines like the TCL C1 and the Aurzen Roku models. Selling a 800-dollar version of a shape that shoppers have learned to associate with 130-dollar hardware is a marketing problem before it is a hardware one.
One line in the specification is easy to miss and changes how the thing gets used. The RX10 accepts power from a battery bank over USB-C, at up to 110W, but only through Dangbei’s own USB-C adapter cable, sold separately. There is no battery inside. So the machine that is designed above all else to be pointed anywhere in the room still has to be tethered to something, and whether that something can be a power bank in your bag depends on a cable that does not come in the box.
