What’s the Difference Between DDR3 and DDR4 for Projector RAM?

The smart home projector is another option for family entertainment, which is convenient and popular. Projectors are kind of delicate electronics and come with various specs. Maybe you’ve figured out what’s resolution and lumen, have learned about projector chip and lamp, now you run into DDR3 and DDR4. What are DDR3 and DDR4? What’s the difference between DDR3 and DDR4?

DDR3 and DDR4 are to describe RAM, RAM means Random Accessing Memory, usually noted as 1GB, 2GB and 3GB. A part of projectors will put their RAM as 1GB DDR4 or 2GB DDR3. What does that mean?

What dose DDR mean?

DDR: Double Data Rate, is synchronous dynamic random access memory, served as computer’s primary working memory. DDR4 is much better than DDR3 in appearance, data rate, specification and power dissipation.

What’s the difference between DDR3 RAM and DDR4 RAM for projectors?

  • Different in data rate

DDR3 and DDR4 are different in data rate. The data rate of DDR3 is 800MHz – 2133MHz, while DDR4 can reach 2133MHz – 3000MHz. Most of the smart devices will adopt a combination of DDR3 and DDR4.

  • Different in appearance

DDR3 and DDR4 are different in appearance. As an updated version, the gold finger of DDR4 is designed to be curve, hence devices subject to DDR3 RAM is not compatible with DDR4 RAM, unless the CPU is replaced.

A small number of users may want to update their projector RAM by themselves, but we don’t recommend this behavior, for projectors are Opto-Mechatronics, dismantle them without professional assistance will face the high risk of malfunction.

  • Different in specification

DDR3 and DDR4 are different in specification. The maximum memory of DDR3 RAM can be up to 64GB, but 16GB and 32GB is more market available. As for the maximum memory of DDR4 RAM can reach 128GB, which means DDR4 is able to provide CPU with stronger support.

  • Different in power dissipation

DDR3 and DDR4 are different in power dissipation. As an updated version of DDR3, the advantage of DDR4 not only lies in the promotion of access data rate and specification but also in the decrease of power dissipation. DDR3 RAM comes in 1.5V, DDR4 RAM comes in 1.2V even lower. Decrease in power dissipation brings lower electricity consumption and less heat production, hence improve the stability of memory bank, avoid the frequency reduction caused by high temperature.

In a word, when choosing a home projector, it’s obvious that projectors with DDR4 RAM have better performance than those with DDR3 RAM.
